Type 1 Diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes, is a condition in which the immune system attacks & destroys the cells that produce insulin. Insulin is an important hormone in the body which allows glucose to enter cells to produce energy.
Type 1 diabetes differs from Type 2 or secondary diabetes in which the cells are attacked by a disease or injury to pancreas rather than the body's own immune system.
What are its symptoms?

Common symptoms of Type 1 diabetes include:
- Severe thirst
- Feeling hungry even after eating
- Parched mouth
- Need to urinate frequently
- Unintended weight loss
- Tiredness & fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Heavy breathing
- Frequent skin or urinary tract infections
- Mood swings
If you or a love one has one or more of these symptoms, consult an endocrinologist immediately. At Dr JP Kotla’s Medical centre, we offer the best possible care for Type 1 diabetes.
What are the possible causes?
There is still no known cause of type 1 diabetes. It is understood be an autoimmune reaction that causes the body's own immune system to go haywire & attack the cells in the pancreas.
While some may be genetically predisposed to develop this disease, others may develop it due to certain environmental factors.
Are there any risk factors?
While the cause still remains unknown, there are certain risk factors which have been identified. These include:
- Family History: People with a sibling or parent suffering from type 1 diabetes are at a higher risk of developing this condition as compared to those who don't have a family history
- Genetics: Presence of a few types of genes can raise your risk of type 1 diabetes
- Age: Researchers have found two important peaks at which type 1 diabetes may occur. These include ages between 4 & 7 years and 10 & 14 years.
Does it lead to any complications?
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease & overtime is likely to affect major organs of the body. However, maintaining blood sugar levels can significantly lower your risk.
Complications of Type 1 Diabetes include:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Neuropathy
- Nephropathy
- Foot disorders
- Skin & oral disorders
- Risk of stillbirth, miscarriage or birth defects

How is it treated?

The goals of treatment for type 1 diabetes is to ensure a blood sugar level that is as close to normal as possible & to delay or prevent complications.
- Insulin & other medications
- Frequent blood sugar monitoring
- Eating a healthy & nutritious diet
- Regular physical activity
- Maintaining ideal bodyweight
